Are you our next SuperHero?

Earlier this year, Joey, who centrally manages the supplies and volunteers for the Community Kitchen (see the “Job Description below), said she needed to step back a bit. Lower demand for the help our team provides meant Joey was able to carry on being the central person, but from September that will no longer be possible for Joey.

So as to get a transition and full hand over from Joey between now and then, we need to find our next central super hero, could that be you?

Community Fridge Volunteer Coordinator

Role:
This is a part-time volunteering role that requires around 2 hours* of your time each week. The community fridge is open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays 10-11am. Volunteers are needed from 8.45-11.15am on these days. The coordinator role doesn’t need to commit to these times, however it would be useful if they are available to attend the fridge occasionally to check in on volunteers / train new volunteers etc. Other duties can be done from home in your own time.

* Most weeks the role takes about 2 hours of admin type tasks. Some weeks it’s this admin plus 3 hours at the Community Fridge and half an hour popping into the Community Fridge on a different day. So it’s normally around 2 hours, but it can some weeks approach 8 hours.

Duties include:

  • Recruiting and co-ordinating volunteers
  • Managing the community fridge volunteer rota
  • Working with other admin volunteers to organise food bags for community members
  • Liaising with local food suppliers and donors to organise food supplies
  • Ensuring the overall smooth running of the community fridge

Skills needed:

  • Access to the internet and a computer
  • Basic computer skills
  • Good organisational skills
  • A ‘can-do’ attitude
  • Good communication skills

Start date:
ASAP with full handover, by super hero Joey.

If you feel you could help, or first want to find out more about the role to consider if this super hero cape would be a good fit for you or not, then please let us know. Best would be if you could drop Joey an email at joey@perransupport.com.

Thank you,
Rory

Are you willing and able to become a Perran Community Support super hero?

All of our team, if they help every week to those who are on our standby list are heroes. We also have a few super heroes. One is the person that is at the core of our day to day operations around providing the Community Fridge free food.

This is currently done by super hero Joey who is stepping down from the role. She has lockdown easing related work on the way.
So Joey needs to hand over her super hero cape, to perhaps you?

Feedback from the Perranporth doctors surgery

This just in from the Perranporth doctors surgery:

“Rory, can you pass on our thanks from the surgery to all of your team who have been doing such a fantastic job in supporting our community. It’s been a relief to know we can signpost people to your service.”

I’ve passed this on to the core admin team and will email out the volunteers. It’s so nice to hear this from our local doctors surgery. All that we have done has only been possible because of an amazing team, in particular Molly, Becky & Barry. But actually, just everybody who’s helped. Our 150+ volunteers doing food and prescription deliveries, buddy ups, calls and all the rest…. Our admin team. The community fridge. All the personal and organisational £ and other donations. This is a truly massive local team effort.

To everybody involved, in any way, big or small. Thankyou.

Feedback – You are keeping people alive – not just literally with the food, but with human interactions.

Lovely feedback from the daughter-in-law of an elderly gent who receives a regular food bag:

“What you are doing is so important. You are keeping people alive – not just literally with the food, but with human interactions. It is hugely appreciated – not only by XXXX, but by us too xx
P.S. Today’s delivery has again really helped to keep his spirits up. Please could you also thank the chap who delivers and spends a few minutes having a quick chat?”

Volunteers update pre VE Day

Again, we thank you for your support in recent weeks, we are still no closer to knowing what our future looks like, we’ll have to see what the briefing contains on Sunday.

This weekend coming should be a long holiday weekend, with the Early May Bank Holiday taking place this Friday the 8th to commemorate the 75th anniversary of VE day. Normally Perranporth would be a hubbub of activity, with busy shops and eateries, and groups enjoying home parties and BBQs if the weather is good.

Unfortunately we are having to celebrate under lockdown, so we are having to get creative; I see the Co-Op have asked for Union Jack flags to be coloured in and they would like to display them, I know the Beavers & Cubs are making & sending bunting to a couple of the care homes.

I’ve seen suggestions of having a ‘stay-at-home’ street party, and people decorating their houses with memorial style decorations and lots of red, white & blue! What are you planning?

I wonder if I can ask you to check in with your buddy, check that they are OK (let us know if they are not), do they need anything that would help them to feel included tomorrow?

Could you ask them one question – “What are you most looking forward to when lockdown ends?”
We’d like to compile the answers, along with yours please?

Do let us know if we can help, thanks again, you really are helping,

Download the image below of some VE Day Bunting you might want to print off and colour in !
